Video Installation

What is Projection Mapping?
Projection Mapping uses everyday video projectors, but instead of projecting on a flat screen (e.g. to display a PowerPoint), light is mapped onto any surface, turning common objects of any 3D shape into interactive displays. More formally, projection mapping is “the display of an image on a non-flat or non-white surface”.
There are many uses for Projection mapping these include; advertising, live concerts, theatre, gaming, computing, decoration and much more. Specialized software can be used to align the virtual content and the physical objects. Projection mapping often has alternative names, these include its original academic term ‘spatial augmented reality’. It is often also called ‘video mapping’.

Central Children’s Store; Russia.
Sila Sveta, who are a Russian team who create projections and animations for events, have brought to life in a projection mapping experience one of the largest toy stores in Russia, the Central Children’s Store. Equipped with 21 projects the experience plays the entire time the store is open. The projections are presented over the walls in the main auditorium. Each of the projections features characters and toys from around the store, this is used for advertisement and for the pleasures of the customers. The aim the creators tried to achieve for this projection mapping is to bring joy and excitement to the children as well as adults in the store, and also to advertise the toys in store.

The visuals in this projection are fun and magical. Bright colours are used in this projection, along with lots of gold. These bold colours are used to make a magical impression amongst the customers, to reflect the magical experiences and feelings that come along with being in a toy store.
The audio also follows the magical theme in this projection which can be heard in the slight ‘twinkling’ sounds. This audio fits well within the projection as it is exciting and joyful just like a toy store and just like the visuals. However, in my opinion, there is a slight hint of mystery within the audio. Perhaps the mystery reflects the magical aspect.

What is Installation Art?

Installation artworks often occupy an entire room or gallery space that the viewer has to walk through in order to engage fully with the art. Some installations, however, are designed simply to be walked around or are so fragile that they can only be viewed from a doorway. What makes installation art different from sculpture or other traditional art forms is that it is a complete unified experience, rather than a display of separate, individual artworks. The focus on how the viewer experiences the work and the desire to provide an intense experience for them is a dominant theme in installation art.

What is Site-specific work?

Site Specific refers to a work of art designed specifically for a chosen location and which also has an interrelationship with that chosen location as well. If removed from this chosen location it would lose all of or substantial part of its overall meaning.

Site Specific is often used of installation works, as in site – specific installation, land art which is almost explained by the definition.

What is Video Installation?

Video Installation is a contemporary art from that combines video technology with installation art, making use of aspects of the surrounding environment being worked in which affects the audience, Tracing back to its origins to the birth of video art in the 1970s, which has increased in popularity as digital video production technology has become more readily accessible.

Today, video installation is ubiquitous and visible in a range of environment; from galleries and museums to an expanded field that includes site-specific work in urban or industrial landscapes. Popular formats include monitor work, projection, and performance, the only requirements are electricity and a dark atmosphere.
