Project Five: Professional Work

For project five I had to research into professional work to help me with inspiration for my final piece of work, so I looked into two well known, professional screenwriters; Jane Goldman, who is an English screenwriter and Quentin Tarantino, who is an American writer and director. I used both these examples to influence my work and give me inspiration after I looked into their movies a little more. I chose these two writers because I already knew a lot about their work and had seen a lot of both of their movies so I knew the style of writing they use and how they approach their ideas. Quentin Tarantino’s work influenced mine more because his had more dark, fantasy aspects to which I was looking for in my story.

Project Five: Secondary & Primary Research

Secondary: For my secondary research I had to research into the idea of the ‘Hero’s Journey’, which could be from any game, book, film, television programme etc and two professional examples of screenwriters which I chose Jane Goldman and Quentin Tarantino as both these people I already knew of and was familiar with their work. I think more of Quentin Tarantino’s work influenced my work rather than Jane Goldman’s did because Quentin does more darker, fantasy styled work, which is what I was aiming for.

Primary: For my own research I looked back at some scripts and short stories I had written for a drama class which helped me to understand more the way I write and how I should approach my ideas. I did also create mind maps and mood boards to help me visualise my ideas more.

In your own words detail what you think the strengths and weaknesses of the production are compared to a professional example and key things you have learnt:
Story: Overall I think my story idea was good, I liked the detail put into it and how it ran smoothly. Although I think if I added more ideas into the story and a little more detail or information in some places the story would make more sense and run smoothly. When writing and planning my story I had a lot of ideas from things I had seen before, and also from my research. Although I didn’t find a professional example that fully influenced my story I did find pieces of examples that suited my ideas. Such as the work of Quentin Tarantino, who is famous for his well-known movies that portray dark fantasy aspects and the way he approaches the different side of things. His work influenced my work a lot as I love the idea of fantasy style things.

Narrative: I think the narrative of my story is very good because I had a lot of detail in the story and the audience would be able to know what is going on and why. However, I think if I had put more information into certain areas the narrative would be much better as the story would make sense more to the reader.

Characters: I really like my characters because they are all different and all act in different ways. The names are inspired by people I know or people I have seen on TV or read about in other books. My main character is different to the others because she has a different attitude to things. Also another character is quite unusual by the way they act and speak which adds something a little interesting. I was rated excellent by my peers for my characters which I am very pleased with because I put a lot of thought into how I wanted my characters to appear to my readers, and how I wanted them to act and speak.

Audience: The audience for my story would be people who like fantasy style things or like something a little different. I would say it is aimed for slightly older people than younger because of the violence in areas.

Overall: To sum up I think my story production went very well and I am pleased with the outcome. I managed to put together multiple ideas smoothly and fit in everything I needed into the word limit.  I think this project has helped me to put my understanding of story writing to a new level and helped me to develop skills in writing stories and scripts. I have also got a new understanding of the job roles in the writing sector, which has given me an insight and new knowledge of the job roles which I could aim for.

Day 2:

Today I did some more research but this time on stories linked to The Hero’s Journey theme. I found loads that were very good and each had their own different little twist. Out of all my ideas I decided to write about a girl named Lennox who doesn’t know she is a werewolf until she gets to the ‘Call To Adventure’ part of The Hero’s Journey. This idea led to more ideas so I decided to go with this idea.

Day 1: Story Writing

Today we got our new project, this was to write a short story (about 1500-2500 words) based on ‘The Hero’s Journey’. Firstly I jotted down any ideas into a mindmap, this way I could keep track of what idea were good and which I wanted to use. Then I researched about movie, screen and script writers to get an idea of how they write and what their ideas are like. I also researched job roles based around writing and found quite a few, ranging from basic story writing to tv writing or movie writing.

Project Five: My Finished Story

Werewolf – my project.

I really enjoyed creating this story because I was able to be creative and put loads of ideas into one thing. I used my professional writers research to influence my ideas by creating something different and fantasy like. I also used my research with the steps of a hero’s journey because it helped me piece together my ideas in the correct order. This helped very much because I was able to organise my work more in a more professional way. The examples of the steps helped a lot too because they gave me inspiration to what ideas would work well and where.
